Friday 20 September: Melides and Portugal
Neither of us sleep well. There is a real thunderstorm with torrential rain all night, sheet lightening and the loudest thunderclaps we’ve ever head. We are mainly dry in the morning and pack away as best we can. It’s cloudy but warm as we drive west again towards Badajos. This must be a very fertile area as there is a lot of cultivation: olives, fruit, maize and quite a lot of transport lorries on the roads. We find campervan parking in the bus terminal at Melides and explore the Roman excavations: amphitheatre for gladiator fights, theatre, mosaic floors, Roman bridge and a quick wizz around the museum. It’s certainly impressive but we may have been spoiled by the authentic and isolated setting and unrestored state of places in Greece. Another unremarkable tapas meal in the square before driving on towards Portugal. We actually see pigs grazing under the oak trees at last! Our campsite is very remote but full! We’re glad we booked. Surrounded by olives groves it’s very peaceful and relaxing. Nice pool too. Bread and cheese for supper. Day trip planned to Monsaraz tomorrow.
