Wednesday 18 September: Caceres
We get the bus into the centre of Caceres. Along with the locals. It’s 1 euro 10 cents and takes about 20 minutes. Then a short walk to the Plaza Mayor and the entrance to the walled medieval town. We ascend the tower at the entrance gate first to get our bearings. It’s still a bit cloudy and we enjoy the cool. Within the walls is an impressive array of Churches, Cathedrals and palaces with cobbled streets and bougainvillea. We dodge the groups of guided tours and enjoy the Cathedral including a climb up the spiral staircase to the bell tower for views. We visit a new Contemporary Art Museum as recommended in a Times article. Interesting albeit quite challenging. Our guide book recommends a popular Tapas Bar for lunch and we head there eagerly only to discover that it only opens Thursday to Sunday! Most places in the old town seem the same and we end up in the Plaza Mayor. Good views but disappointingly mediocre meal really. We don’t seem to have much luck with tapas! A further wander before weary legged we get the bus back to the campsite. Today we manage 10 lengths of the very long pool and enjoy reading and planning. Probably heading east to Guadalupe tomorrow.
